Personal Musings: A Little Mustard Seed Goes A Long Way

quote barbara mckay

“I have a mustard seed and I’m not afraid to use it.”

That is one of my favorite quotes from Joseph Ratzinger, better known as Pope Benedict XVI and based on the Bible verse Matthew 17:20.

In food or faith, a little mustard seed goes a long way!

Whether it’s for salads and their dressings, fish and their sauces, meats and their marinades, a bit of tangy mustard or tiny mustard seeds dominate the other flavors.

Mustard is a powerful plant, a fast growing annual herb.  It was the smallest seed the Jewish people planted in their gardens, but it became the largest plant when it was grown.

The same is true for faith.  For me, that little mustard seed is a huge reminder that any time I need some courage to make a decision, take something in a new direction, or take the plunge into a new endeavor, if I focus on even a mustard seed size of faith and not on doubts, all will be well.

That mustard seed of faith helped me launch this site and I’m very grateful that you have chosen to visit.  Thank you for taking this journey with me.

And this little musing just reminded me of a favorite fish recipe with a delicious mustard glaze. I will post that soon!

  1. I didn’t realize the mustard plant grew to be the largest in the garden after birthing from the smallest measure. What another wonderful example that scripture has offered for advanving our understanding. I love how you tie these special anecdotes to your offerings of great food and good tidings Barbara. Truly a blessing…! (and I can’t wait to hear more about your mustard glaze fish dish 🙂
