Today, we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 89th birthday.
On this special holiday, I wish to honor him by lifting up our community — from our leaders to educators to artists to law enforcement — in prayer, hoping that they will follow Dr. King’s teachings and demonstrate his love for humanity, compassion and inclusion.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I’m sharing 10 of my favorite quotes from a man who changed our country with his poignant words and inspiring actions.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”
“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
“The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others.”
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”
“True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice.”
“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
