Watching news coverage of the devastation from both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma is truly heartbreaking. As we watch, however, many of us wonder:
“How can I help?”
I wanted to answer that question with today’s post. Read on to discover various ways you can help victims of Harvey and Irma, no matter where you are.
According to the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI), the best way to help with hurricane relief efforts is to donate money, rather than material items, to trusted organizations. This is due to the fact that money enables charities to cater to various needs of those affected by storms.
The CIDI further notes in their guidelines for giving, that financial contributions can allow relief supplies to be purchased near a disaster site, avoiding transportation costs and any potential shipping delays. In addition, donated items such as clothing, food and other household items can often go to waste.
The most important thing to consider before giving a donation, however, is the legitimacy of the organization.
Fortunately, Charity Navigator has compiled a list of trusted groups for providing assistance in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. Organizations include American Red Cross, UNICEF and Habitat for Humanity International. If you’d like to make a donation, I invite you to click on one of the below links to learn more.
