Fashion Friday: Sweatshirts Go from Leisure to Luxury

Now that designers have made our feet comfortable and acceptable in sneakers, they have moved on to convert comfy sweatshirts into cool and chic toppers to be worn anywhere. Relaxed and casual sweatshirts have become sophisticated and glam. I love how leisurewear has become luxury wear.

Besides being soft and comfortable, sweatshirts are the perfect segue from summer to winter, when it’s getting cool, but not cold enough for a coat. And their soft, organic cotton fabric is a little kinder to the skin than a scratchy, woolly sweater.

Designers have given us sweatshirts in choices of styles and colors as well as ways to wear them ANYWHERE. Here are three of my favorites found at Capitol, dressed up and down.

You know I love the Carolina Panthers, so this Panther-themed sweat shirt by Valentino is a favorite, paired with Jonathan Cohen culottes for game day or with Lanvin white satin pants for any day.

Changing out my sneakers for YSL‘s black suede heels with crystal bows or  Paul Andrew’s suede pink pumps with crystal heels, take the sweatshirt up another notch, as does the vintage Janavi shawl.

The cropped Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini red sweatshirt with frills on the sleeve is fun to wear with Derek Lam jeans and espadrilles. Dress it up with a navy suede skirt by Alejandro Alfonso Rojas and Stuart Weitzman booties.

My Mark Jacobs sweatshirt with bling makes me smile. He has been one of my favorite designers for years, so I don’t mind just shouting it out with his sweatshirt. I can casually wear it with a white shirt, Rick Owens suede pants or black jeans, and Adidas sneakers for day. Then for evening, just toss on gold pumps and a Dries van Noten black and gold jacket.

For those of you who are creative and prefer to DIY, you can transform a sports store sweatshirt into one of your own designs.   Fabric or craft stores are stocked with patches, iron-ons, sequins and jewels. Use your imagination or you can find plenty of DIY design ideas on Pinterest!
